Verify a Romanian company by CUI
Enter the Romanian tax ID (CUI or RO-prefixed VAT number). You get the company's registration status, ANAF tax status, VAT registration, VAT on collection, e-Invoice registration and VIES validity, as of the moment of the query. Free, no account, from official public sources. The result page is in Romanian; the glossary below explains each label.
Free, no account. 10 checks per day. The result is a snapshot at query time.
How do you verify a Romanian company?
Four public sources answer four different questions. The Trade Register (ONRC) confirms that the company exists and is active. ANAF confirms its tax status: registered, inactive, VAT-registered or not. VIES confirms whether the VAT number is valid for intra-EU transactions. The courts portal shows whether the company is in insolvency. This tool queries the first three; the fourth, together with the balance sheet, the score and the credit limit, is available with an account.
What do the labels on the result mean?
| Label (RO) | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Stare ONRC | Registry status: Functiune = active; Dizolvare, Radiere = dissolved, struck off |
| Status fiscal ANAF | Activ = registered taxpayer; Inactiv fiscal = declared inactive by ANAF (no VAT deduction on its invoices) |
| TVA inregistrat | VAT-registered (Da = yes, Nu = no), with the start date |
| TVA la incasare | Cash-accounting VAT scheme |
| TVA anulat din oficiu | VAT registration cancelled ex officio by ANAF |
| e-Factura | Registered in the national e-Invoice system (mandatory for B2B in Romania) |
| Split TVA | Split VAT payment mechanism |
| VIES | Intra-EU VAT number validity |

Frequently asked questions
What is a CUI and how is it different from the VAT number?
The CUI (Cod Unic de Inregistrare) is the Romanian tax identification number, 2 to 10 digits with a check digit. The VAT number is the same number prefixed with "RO", and only companies registered for VAT have it. A company can have a CUI without being VAT-registered.
Why does VIES say "invalid" for a company that exists?
VIES only returns valid for companies currently registered for intra-EU VAT. A Romanian company that is not VAT-registered, or whose VAT code was cancelled ex officio by ANAF, exists in the Trade Register but is invalid in VIES. Check the ANAF status to see which case applies.
How many free checks can I run?
10 per day from the same IP address. Results are cached for 24 hours so that public services are not overloaded. For volume checks, use an account.
What does "inactive taxpayer" mean?
ANAF declares a company inactive when it fails to file returns, cannot be found at its registered office or has expired office documents. Invoices issued by an inactive company do not give the buyer the right to deduct VAT or expenses. Inactivity is a knock-out condition in our score.
